Block boring and decking
Head surfacing

The VB-160 allows us to blueprint your engine block, boring the cylinders and decking in one set up. It’s equipped with an XYZ readout that enables the operator to make precise adjustments. Sleeves are also installed with the correct pressed fit after the cylinder is bored on the VB. Cylinder heads are surfaced on this machine giving them the proper finish recommended by todays gasket manufacturers. Heads can be surfaced flat or at an angle for compression as needed and the intake face corrected.

Block honing

This machine hones cylinders to the correct clearance for pistons and rings, keeping cylinder walls straight, and giving the recommended finish for the piston rings being used. With several different tooling set ups we’re able to go from 2” to 5” bore sizes. Torque plates can also be used, and are highly recommended for performance applications, to ensure a round and true bore. The job of the torque plate is to mimick a cylinder head being on the block throughout the honing process, thus making sure all stresses remain the same once the actual heads are installed.

Line boring and honing

This is where it all starts – after the block is cleaned and qualified it’s checked for proper size and alignment of the main bores. Even new blocks are checked for proper journal size and usually require honing to correct. Installation of new aftermarket steel caps is also done here, first requiring boring and then honing to final size. The cap and rod grinder is used in cutting the main caps before they are torqued using new main bolts or studs. The line honing process is critical for several reasons. All other block dimensions begin at this point, and when the main journals are in proper alignment, and have the correct bearing crush and clearance, it ensures the crankshaft can rotate as freely as possible for optimum horsepower.

Lifter bore sleeves installed

The Acer vertical milling maching is where we are able to true lifter bores and install sleeves using the BHJ lifter true. Once the lifter bores are milled bronze sleeves are installed and then honed to size. The advantage of this is that it puts everything, cam – lifters – pushrods, in proper alignment keeping these parts “happy” and alleviating any unnessesary wear. We also are able to do various fabricating with the Acer.

Competition valve job

Here we are able to do precise multi-angle valve jobs, valve guide work, and to accurately cut away material to receive hardened exhaust seats. This ensures the valves are “seating” properly for the best performance. Chambers can also be “unshrouded” creating better airflow.

Balancing

The DCB-750 balances rotating assemblies for externally or internally balanced engines. The pistons and rods are first equalized, then their weight along with the weight of the rings and bearings are added to get a “bobweight”. These are then installed on the crankshaft which is spun  and the computer determines where material needs to be removed or added. Flywheels and harmonic balancers are also able to be balanced on this machine. Balancing is critical for a smooth operating engine, particularly in high performance applications.

Rod Reconditioning

Here we can recondition connecting rods, honing them to size for the proper bearing crush. First, both halves are cut on the cap and rod grinder. Then new rod bolts are installed and torqued before resizing. Pin bushings are also installed and then honed to size with this machine.
